New York

New York United States

New York is EXACTLY everything you imagine it to be and more!  We have all been here, if not in person then in our minds or imagination with our much-loved movies and TV shows such as the hit US comedy ‘Friends’ and Christmas movie ‘ELF’.  New York is an architectural marvel of magnificent buildings with plenty of historical sites to see, it is one of the most famous cities in the whole world!  Yellow school buses, yellow taxis, giant sky scrapers and quaint quirky little coffee shops, it has it all and it will take you on an adventure of a lifetime!

In winter New York is a white wonderland, walking through the city all the shops and Christmas decorations really make you feel that excitement you get as a child, the department store decorates better than anything you have ever seen!  Strolling through Central Park you can take a horse and cart ride or skate in the famous ice rink surrounded by the lights of the city around you.

There is an abundance of winter festivals and celebrations going on, you can see the new year in with the city’s biggest street party of the year in time square and watch the famous ball drop or in January head to China town for an explosion of colours and dancing dragons plus lots of yummy food and celebrate the Chinese New Year.

New York is an all year city and although its winter celebrations are some of the most popular summer brings just as much fun, picnics and free shows on the central park main stage are a regular appearance throughout summer, there are many cafes where you can just sit outside in the sun and people watch.  Rooftop outdoor cinemas are popular in the evenings and of course you can’t come to New York without catching a real Broadway show!  However you choose to spend your days you are guaranteed lots of fun.

Travel

New York Taxi Travel USA

There are lots of different ways to travel New York city, walking (a lot of walking!) if the best way to really take in all the sites and the buildings, you can even book on walking tours to make sure you don’t miss any sites.  Subway is the next best option and is the cheapest, lets be honest you can come to New York without experiencing the subway!  It is the fastest way to get around and it is open 24/7 365 days! So, you can guarantee that you will always have transport available.

Taxi or car service can be good if you’re in a group and can share the cost however New York city is prone to traffic jams and it can take a long time to get from A to B.

Other options include, buses and hop on hop off busses, these however are more for sites rather than transportation.

Statue of liberty New York USA

The famous New York landmark that features in nearly every film set in New York, the statue of liberty was gifted to New York by the French in 1886 to celebrate friendship designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and built by Gustave Eiffel, from base to the tip of the torch it is a massive 305 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs 225 tons!  In 1986 the torch underwent restoration and was carefully covered with thin sheets of 24k gold.  You can book day trips over to Liberty island to see the statue, inside there are 377 steps to climb to the crown! Make sure you go to the toilet as the only one is back down the 377 steps!

The Empire State building

Emipre State Building New York USA

Take in the views of the whole of New York and further from the 86th and 102nd floors of this spectacular Art Deco sky scraper!  Located in midtown Manhattan when this building first opened in 1931 it held the record for the tallest building in the world! At 1,250 feet tall since its has been built is has captured the interest of millions and has a total of 73 elevators!  The upper mast on top of the building was originally designed for mooring airships where I was intended that passengers would then exit via and open air gangplank and check in through customs; high winds however made this impossible and the idea was scrapped. Over 90 movies have features the empire state building the most popular being ‘King Kong’.
